The winter months can be difficult for many of us and our mental health. It’s ok if you’re finding the winter months a bit difficult, whilst we can’t control the weather, we can look at ways to protect our mental health and wellbeing.
Sleep well
It can often seem like one long, uphill battle when all you want to do is wrap up in a duvet. Even the sun decides to pack it in at 4:45pm avoid oversleeping as this can make you feel worse, try to keep to your normal routine.
Look after your physical health
Recent evidence found as little as 10 minutes a day of exposure to nature could be beneficial to students. So why not wrap up and go for a short walk and enjoy the benefits of some fresh air!
Make the most of natural light
You might find it helps to spend time in natural light, for example going for walks, spending time in parks or gardens, or simply sitting near a window.
Stay connected
It might be too cold to go outside, but a friendly natter by phone, popping round to visit family or meeting friends online can help you feel better.
Do things you enjoy
Take the darkening nights as a bonus to enjoy a bit of time for yourself, whether it’s reading, binge watching a box set under a blanket, doing a jigsaw or learning a hobby.
Remember that it’s OK to be “not OK” There are people who can support you – with the right help you can find a way of coping with any difficulties that you have. Talk to friends, family or a trusted teacher or take a look at some of the resources below:
