Six tips to stay cool during the hot weather

We wait all year for some sunny weather, and then as soon as a heat wave comes around, we moan that it’s too hot! But as temperatures are set to soar again this week, we have prepared some hints and tips about how to stay as comfortable as possible during the hot weather in your student accommodation – or anywhere you are.

  • Keep blinds or curtains closed – this helps stop the heat getting inside! Quite simply the majority of heat comes in through your windows (think of a greenhouse), by shutting your curtains or blinds (or even putting a bed sheet over your window) you can reduce the temperature by at least 5 degrees. So open up your windows to allow the air in your home to circulate, but keep those curtains closed!
  • Wear light and airy! Did you know that dark colours absorb more heat than light colours? So you’ll feel a lot cooler if you stick to white (or other light coloured) clothing, especially if they are made out of breathable fabrics like cotton or linen.
  • Do you have a fan?  Did you know that fans are usually most efficient at their lowest speed setting. Turning up the power shifts more air, but it uses more electricity, generating more heat and noise in the process. Try to stick with the slowest speed that produces an effective draft. You can also make a homemade air conditioning unit – To do this: Position a fan behind a shallow bowl of ice, frozen water bottle, or ice pack. As the ice melts, you’ll experience the ultimate cooling breeze!
  • Use a hot water bottle to cool you down – sounds crazy! But try adding some cold water (or stick it in the freezer) to create a nicely sized icepack to put at the bottom of your bed for your feet!
  • Stay hydrated! Your body needs more water than usual when you are in a hot environment because you’ll lose more fluids through sweating. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty! Drink water throughout the day to prevent dehydration or over exhaustion.
  • Time for some spice! If you’re feeling hot and bothered, hot drinks and spicy food can cool you down. Spicy heat will raise your internal temperature, you’ll start sweating and once the moisture has evaporated, you’ll start to cool off. So go grab that cuppa or enjoy a delicious curry!
