Cyber Security Awareness Month

October sees the start of Cybersecurity Awareness Month. Cyber security is the means by which individuals and organisations reduce the risk of being affected by cyber crime.

Cyber security’s core function is to protect the devices we all use (smartphones, laptops, tablets and computers), and the services we access online – from theft or damage. It’s also about preventing unauthorised access to the vast amounts of personal information we store on these devices, and online. From online banking and shopping, to email and social media, it’s more important than ever to take steps that can prevent cyber criminals getting hold of your accounts, data, and devices. 

We’re sure that you all have long passwords, know what a phishing email is and how to deal with it, but we will be taking the opportunity to remind you of a few tips to protect your Cybersecurity…

Strong Passwords

When implemented correctly, passwords are a free, easy and effective way of helping to prevent unauthorised users accessing devices or networks. Combine three random words to create a password that’s ‘long enough and strong enough’ to create your password. Need help remembering all your passwords? Get a password manager, or save them to your browser. And remember to make sure you avoid the worst passwords that millions of people still use!

Virus Protection

Hopefully you are up to date with your real-world boosters, but what about your computer/phone/laptop/tablet? Many universities offer free virus software to students so that’s always a good place to check first. At the very least, use an antivirus product, even if it is the free/trial version.

Received a suspicious message?

In a typical phishing attack, scammers send fake emails to thousands of people asking for sensitive information (such as bank details) or containing links to bad websites. They do this to steal your details to sell or perhaps to access your organisation’s information.

Some phishing emails are more sophisticated than others, but it helps to be aware of some of the more obvious clues. These include:

• Phishing flags Does it contain poor quality images of logos?
• Are there spelling or grammatical errors?
• Does it address you as ‘dear friend’ rather than by name?
• Is it asking you to act urgently?
• Does it refer to a previous message you don’t remember seeing?

2-step verification

Turning on 2SV is one of the most effective ways to protect your online accounts from cyber criminals. You should protect your most important accounts (such as email, banking, social media and online shopping) by making sure you have 2-step verification turned on for each of them.

Cyber Security Made Simple

Simple steps can make the world of difference, so don’t forget:

• Always lock your device when you’re not using it
• Only download apps and software from official app stores like Google Play or Apple’s App Store
• Don’t share accounts with others
• Create a culture of questioning – if it looks strange, get a second opinion
