Student Guide: De-clutter and make some money!

Have you been hoarding whilst you’ve been at Uni? Are you wondering how to make money over the summer as a student? It’s time to replenish some of those student loans and make some extra cash by selling stuff you no longer want online.

Now is the perfect time to re-sell your old items and clothing that you’re not using anymore. What could be better than de-cluttering and actually making money from your clutter? Our best advice, if you haven’t used it in the last six months (or longer) and there is no real sentimental value then get rid!

Take a look at our round up of options where you can pick up a pound or two whilst clearing out your unwanted stuff!

Best for Clothes:

There are lots of places to sell clothes online. It’s a great way to clear out your wardrobe and make some extra cash. Make sure you are honest about the condition of the item; this can help you get good reviews so that people feel secure in buying from you.

Best for old Tech:

Hands up if you’re guilty of having a drawer full of old bits of tech? Have you got an old phone gathering dust? Or perhaps a broken device you think no one will want?  Well there are sites that might be interested in what you’re not using. Here are a few sites you could try:

On most of these sites you enter the details of your tech, get offered a price, and if you are happy with it you can pop your item in a box and send it free of charge. Just make sure you check the terms of conditions so your tech isn’t sent back to you!

If it’s a phone you are selling you might find it useful to check Compare and Recycle whose mission is to help customers to make the most money for their phones.

Best for Books.

Got loads of old textbooks lying around, or need to make some room on your shelves for some new fiction? Selling books online is a great way to make some extra income. The sooner you sell your used textbooks, the better as they can become outdated quickly.

As there are usually a lot of fiction books on offer, you won’t necessarily make a lot of money on these sorts of sites unless you have a lot of books to sell. If you are selling fiction, you’ll make more money with rarer titles in your collection – make sure you check the books edition before listing. You might have something that’s valuable without even realising it if it’s a really early edition of a book.

Best for other stuff.

Ebay is a good generalist auction marketplace where you can anything, though there are listing fees (11.9% of the sales price)  Facebook Marketplace is great if you only want to deal with local sales and want a super quick and easy way to get rid of stuff.

Not so fussed on making cash, but still want to recycle and re-home your things? Post your items in your local group on Freecycle or take it to your nearest charity shop.
