It’s that time of year again, university will soon be finishing for another year and students up and down the country are thinking about packing up and leaving their student accommodation. Packing up your belongings and having to move out is never much fun so we’ve put together some helpful tips for making your packing and moving a little easier.
Be Organised and pack smart!
It can be surprising how much stuff you can accumulate over a short period, so it’s important that you get organised before moving day rather than leaving it to the last minute.
Why not see if you can get some boxes from local shops in advance of moving day. When packing try and do it room by room and label those boxes well – this will help you unpack more easily when you arrive at your new accommodation.
It can be a good idea to create an essentials box which includes items you will need up until the last minute, then right away in your new home. This might include items like your kettle, tea, coffee, toilet roll, bedding, towels and toiletries.
Have a good sort out and de-clutter
Give yourself enough time to sort through your items properly, there’s nothing worse than unpacking everything and finding things you don’t need and things you wish you hadn’t have packed.
Try sorting your items into four categories; keep, bin, giveaway (to friends or donating to charity) or sell (think Ebay, Vinted or Facebook Marketplace).
De-cluttering is not only going to lighten your load when it does come to moving out of your accommodation, but it also presents the opportunity to pass on your unwanted items to people that might find them useful.
Have a good clean
Making sure your accommodation is left spick and span is a much, especially if you want to get your deposit back.
Make sure you plan your cleaning for a date before your move out so you give yourself enough time.
Also, check your contract or contact your landlord about the state you should leave the property in, to avoid further charges. It’s important to be upfront about any damages to avoid disputes after you have moved out. Deal with any as early as you can, to avoid a stressful situation later.
Tell folks you are leaving
As well as letting your landlord know when you are planning to leave your property there are other organisations you will probably need to tell about your change of address.
These might typically include the university, your bank, Royal Mail, Amazon and other companies you frequently use. If you fail to remember your private mail could still go to your old address and be open by the next occupants.
