Energy Saving Tips for Students

Earth Day takes place on 22 April every year but the entire month of April (sometimes called Earth Month) – and especially the week running up to Earth Day (sometimes called Earth Week) – is a time when environmental issues take centre stage.

Participating in this global event raises awareness of the importance of protecting our planet and its natural resources. In addition, it encourages people to engage in conserving the environment.

People all around the world are encouraged to do things to benefit the environment, from recycling and planting trees to reducing their carbon footprints.

We can all do our bit to be a little bit greener, even as students 💚 🌎 Here are our energy saving tips for student:

  1. Turn off lights – really simple but it makes a big difference!
  • Use only the water you need when you boil a kettle – pour cold water into the mug first and then tip it into the kettle to get the right amount.

  • Use less hot water – We are all guilty of using too much hot water, so fill the basin when shaving, use the shower instead of the bath and turn the tap off while brushing your teeth.
  • When the weather outside is frightful, a hot shower can be so delightful but they can use a lot of energy. The good news is that experts say you should only be showering for about five minutes, or a little longer if you’re washing your hair.

  • Wash your clothes on a low temperature – wash clothes at 30ºC, nowadays detergents work just as well at lower temperatures.
  • As well as the energy we use directly in our homes, every product we buy has a carbon footprint: the energy used in making that product and getting it to you will almost certainly have caused some carbon emissions. Think about where your food is coming from and try to use produces produced locally or in season.

  • Try to re-use wherever possible and recycle when you no longer need something.
  • Reduce plastic, the effects are drastic! With over 8.3 billion tons of plastic, the Earth is in need of a bit of TLC!

If we each reduce our own energy consumption, even just a little, that would add up to a huge reduction in our national carbon emissions.  Taking control of our energy consumption and reducing our own emissions is a positive step towards keeping our planet safe for future generations.
