Summer is pretty much here! After a year of essays and study sessions, all-nighters and exams it’s time for a well earned break. What are your plans for the summer? The options for students are endless! Here are our ten top suggestions for you to get the most out of your university summer holidays.
Go to a festival
Here in the UK we have some of the best festivals the world has to offer! Festivals aren’t known for being student-budget friendly, but if the line-up features lots of your favourite artists, then it can be cheaper than going to a gig. And if you find yourself strapped for cash, a great way to sample some of the best music around, whilst making money, is to look for a job at a festival, organisers are often looking for people to work shifts on bars, food stands or litter-picking, and the rest of your time can be spent as you please!
Nature comes in all shapes and sizes—from a stroll in the park to a hike in the country. Contact with nature is well known to enhance creativity, bolster mood, lower stress, improve mental perception and well-being. If you are in the city why not explore your local park – you might be surprised at how many trees are close by. Or, if you want to start walking further start with short walks along reasonably level paths, then look for walking routes by the coast, rivers and lakes or through the hills. There are plenty of walking routes available online for you to enjoy and explore including some around Stoke-on-Trent (see our previous blog post)!
Take advantage of your free time with a spot of travelling. Whether you’d like to explore a foreign city, backpack through Europe, or simply take a road trip with friends, summer is the perfect time to get out and explore. Whether you get a bus, train, car, or plane look into international travel discounts for students, educational tours and student travel groups.
Work a summer job for a bit of extra cash
Work, not what you want to do in the summer, but it’s something you might thank yourself for later on. From working in a bar, shop or café, or something else, you’ll reap the awards when you’re back at Uni. Plus working over the summer; whether part-time or full-time could help you acquire transferable skills especially if you look for something related to your future career.
Get an Internship
Landing yourself an internship over the summer can put you ahead of the competition when it comes to graduation. Lots of university careers services promote internships and work experience over the summer month, so take what you learned in the classroom and apply your knowledge! Even if it doesn’t offer a salary, a summer internship is a great way to learn more about a business or industry and gain practical work experience to add to your CV.
Why not look for opportunities for you to support this summer, whether it’s research programmes, charities, festivals or other non-profit groups. Volunteering comes in all shapes and sizes, these days some charities will have opportunities where you can offer support online or over the phone. Not only are you offering your time to a good cause to help people who need it most, but volunteering will also allow you to acquire new skills, boost your CV and even get you some extra qualifications.
Get a head start on upcoming classes!
Now we know this doesn’t sound fun, but it’s another one of those you’ll thank yourself for later. The long vacation period is the perfect time to do some wider reading around your subject, or build up your knowledge of topics you’ve already covered. You might want to get ahead on next year’s modules, or start working on ideas for your dissertation. Make the most of the good weather by picking a location that is conducive to pleasant reading. Get outside and take your reading with you – then you can catch up and still feel that you are taking part in a summer activity.
