Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ+) Pride Month is celebrated each year in the month of June because it’s the anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan in June 1969.
At Stoke Student Living we welcome all students including those that identify under the LGBTQ+ spectrum. There is no specific LGBTQ+ only accommodation in our buildings, however, the accommodation that we provide is inclusive of all students.
Support and Getting Social
LGBT Stoke is a support service created especially for the LGBTQ+ community in Stoke-on-Trent. They hold social and support groups and provide information and advice on sexual health and LGBTQ+ topics.
Also at both the local Universities (Staffordshire and Keele), both the Students’ Union have groups for the LGBTQ+ community with the Keele LGBTQ+ Society and the Staffs Uni LGBTQ+ Network.
And if you are struggling don’t suffer in silence – talk it through with someone. Whether it’s a family member or friend, your GP or university tutor, sharing your feelings will help.
Events to look out for
Stoke-on-Trent Pride has quickly grown into one of Stoke-on-Trent’s biggest and most vibrant annual community festivals welcoming not only the LGBTQ+ community but everyone who values diversity in our City and wishes to celebrate equality. This year Stoke-on-Trent Pride will be taking place in Hanley Park on Saturday 18 June, from 12 till 6pm.
From Stoke Station (which is in walking distance from our accommodation), in just over 1.5hrs, you can be in London, for what is undoubtedly the biggest Pride event; Pride in London. This year marks 50 years of celebrating Pride in the UK with the colourful Pride in London Parade, as well as free festivity events that take place in Trafalgar Square.
Or another short train ride away can take you into Manchester city centre for their Manchester Pride Festival over the bank holiday weekend on 26 – 29 August 2022 (costs apply). The Pride Festival hosts a variety of events, some free to attend and others require you to purchase a ticket.
Or finally, again a short train ride away, is Birmingham where Birmingham Pride, over 24th – 25 September, is going to be celebrating its 25th year in what is sure to be a fantastic event celebrating the LGBTQ+ community.
You might also want to sign up for updates for Student Pride, which usually takes place in April. They are the UK’s biggest LGBT+ student event; made for students, run by students, and committed to improving the queer student experience across the UK. Every year, they come together from across the UK and abroad, with LGBTQ+ pro-active employers, hosting the UK’s largest LGBTQ+ careers fair, Proud Careers.
